About tournament

In 2015, the first leg of the Rugby Europe Women’s Sevens Grand Prix Series was held for the first time in Kazan, at the Tulpar Stadium. Russia emerged victorious in the leg after beating France in the tightly-contested final.

The Tatarstan capital has built a reputation for successfully designing and delivering major international competitions, including European and world championships in a variety of sports and the 27th Summer Universiade where Russia’s men’s and women’s rugby sevens teams claimed top podium spots.

The Kazan leg of the Rugby Europe Women’s Sevens Grand Prix Series 2016 was a final test for the Russian women’s national rugby sevens team in the lead-up to the last Olympic qualification event in Dublin (IRL). 12 national squads clashed for the European title: Russia, France, Ireland, Great Britain 1, Great Britain 2, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Finland, Netherlands, Ukraine. The Russian national team played in Group B against Ireland, Italy and Belgium.

The tournament ended with the victory of the defending champions, France. In the final match, Team France defeated Russia by a score of 22-12.
