In 2023, Kazan celebrated the 10th anniversary of the 27th Summer Universiade – one of the brightest events in the history of Kazan.

About Universiade

The 27th Summer Universiade became a record-breaker in terms of the number of medals, sports and participants. 351 sets of medals were awarded in 27 sports. In 2013, 11,778 representatives of 162 countries took part in the Games.

The Universiade opening ceremony took place on July 6, 2013 at the Ak Bars Arena Stadium and gathered 45,000 spectators. The celebration was attended by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, Rais (Head) of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov and other honored guests.

The Universiade experience was widely used during the next large-scale multi-sports event staged by the Russian Federation – Sochi 2014 Olympic Games. In two years Kazan played host to the FINA World Championships, and in 2017 and 2018 the Tatarstan capital staged matches of high-profile football tournaments – FIFA Confederations Cup and FIFA World Cup.
