The final round of the Speedrun + Super Final discipline confirmed the fairness of the tournament table. The leaders showed the best results, and all the teams retained their places.
After two rounds, which took place on February 28-29, the line-ups of the races changed. The first match of the final day featured four teams that completed the standings: King of Mordor, RGG-Team, Dragonspeed and Casual. The leading four gathered in the second group: SpeedRussians, Moonshiners, The Cheaters and AIP.
The scoring system remained the same: for each of the three games, points were distributed according to the place occupied among all eight participants. The fastest player of the day brought 10 points to his team, the second – 8, the third – 6, each next received one point less. In the third round, the teams played the games Dark Souls 3, Battletoads and Shrek 2.
The Battletoads race was won by Stanislav Xray Ulshin from King of Mordor, the team of the second four. The game gave in to him in 26 minutes and 46 seconds.
“I’ve been training at the “toads” for two or three weeks. Before that, I played them only as a child on the console. I’m glad I was able to get through so quickly. But I am sure that I am able to do it many times faster,” said Stanislav Xray Ulshin. “Participation in Games of the Future is something incredible. I have not played in such tournaments before, I will be glad to come again.”
The final boss in Shrek 2 in the first group was defeated the fastest by Dmitry rekvizit8bit Akimov from RGG-Team. It took him 23 minutes and 35 seconds to complete the game.
Kirill Hyomushka Minaev from Dragonspeed got into the top 4 in terms of the speed of hardcore Dark Souls 3. He defeated the Soul of Ashes and ignited the flame after 1 hour and 11 minutes. Kirill said that the Dark Souls series is his favorite and it is a great luck to play it at the tournament.
“I’m a streamer, and I’ve been through DS dozens of times on streams. And speedruns, and challenges, and requests from the spectators. I know the game inside and out,” – Kirill Hyomushka Minaev said. “Therefore, it was a big surprise that I died on two initial bosses. The first one is generally educational. I’ve never failed like this at home. But then I pulled myself together and took the lead. I liked that you can see on the screens how far we are from the end, thanks to the organizers for that, it helped me focus a lot. Overall, I enjoy Games of the Future and the atmosphere here. There’s real Sci-Fi all around!”
A lot of enthusiasts gathered at the Speedrun tournament. Nikolay Gubanov from the Russian Geek channel is a long-time fan of retro games. There are more than a thousand cartridges and discs in his collection. He came to Kazan as a commentator.
“Games of the Future is a large-scale event. I am very glad that I was invited. There is an opportunity to watch the tournament and chat. Such events can attract a lot of spectators. I think in 10-15 years it is quite possible that games in the phygital concept will become as popular as the Olympics. The generation is growing, interests are changing,” Nikolai Gubanov said.
Viktor Karasev from the YouTube channel “Cozy Cellar” also became a guest commentator. He is convinced that such tournaments can spark interest in old games among the younger generation.
“My son is now seven years old. He enjoys playing old consoles: Sega, Super Nintendo, Dendy, Gameboy. Sometimes he comes up to me and asks me how I passed this or that place as a child. And I think it’s cooler to play on consoles than on emulators. There is a certain charm in this,” shared Viktor Karasev.
The SpeedRussians team took the first place in the first round and then did not allow competitors to approach them. The race of Valdemar valdemarka Shkola from SpeedRussians and Alexey deserve Rozhko from Moonshiners in Shrek 2 became tense. The athletes moved almost synchronously, but in the end Valdemar still beat his main opponent by 7 seconds. According to Shkola, Shrek 2 is one of his favorite games.
“As a child, I played Shrek a lot. I remember the level for the donkey with cool music. I even danced to it. Actually, I’m a fan of old games. Thanks to speedruns, they will be in demand for a long time,” says Valdemar valdemarka Shkola. ” The race was great today. The guys from Moonshiners are also great fellows. I’m glad we became friends. Games of the Future is a great place to meet new people and share experiences.”
The final game of the tournament was Dark Souls 3. The fastest in it was Finn Larry Henrik olsku Seppe from AIP. The Soulslike succumbed to him in 50 minutes and 30 seconds. Seppe is the world record holder in DS3 with a time of 28 minutes 47 seconds. But Olari could not improve this result at Games of the Future.
“I am the record holder in the “All bosses” category, here we had another variant. But in any case, I enjoyed it and, I think, I performed well. Kazan is a beautiful city, in winter it is similar to many cities in Finland. I really liked it here,” said Olari Henrik olzku Seppe.
