London 2014 Olympic champion beat China’s Shi Yue.

Many time medal winner Elisa Di Francisca of Italy became gold medallist in the women’s individual event. Seed 5, the fencer effortlessly defeated Israeli Nicole Pustilnik in the table 64 round (15:12), then beat Germany’s Leonie Ebert (15:8), left no chance to Aida Mohamed of Hungary (15:3) in the quarterfinal, won against her compatriot Alice Volpi in the semifinal (15:7) and bested China’s Shi Yue in the final (9:8). For Elisa, it is the second gold won in Kazan. At the 2014 world championships in Kazan she became the champion in the team tournament.

“I am very happy! Really. I’ve worked hard to win, considering that it is difficult for me to devote all time to sports. I’m a mom now, I have a son. I’m happy and I’ll be even happier when I get home. Yue put up a serious fight, it wasn’t easy. I was not surprised by her victory over Inna Deriglazova in the quarterfinal because I met Yue before, and I know that she is a very talented fencer. The overall organization in Kazan is just perfect. Tomorrow I will compete in the team tournament,” Di Francisca said.

Bronze medals went to Russia’s Adelina Zagidullina and Italy’s Alice Volpi.
