The European Judo Championships were staged in Kazan on April 21-24, 2016. Training sessions and the tournament itself took place at the Tatneft Arena Sports Palace (42 Chistopolskaya St.).
Competition schedule
The tournament was held from April 21 to 24 in the following weight categories:
- April 21 Women: -48/-52/-57kg, Men: -60/-66kg;
- April 22 Women: -63/-70kg, Men: -73/-81kg;
- April 23 Women: -78/+78kg, Men: -90/-100/ +100kg;
- April 24 Men’s and women’s team competition.

- April 22 Opening ceremony;
- April 24 Closing ceremony and flag handover.
About championships
The European Judo Championships have been held since 1951. Until 1975 only men were participating in these competitions. Since 1975 women also began taking part in the Championships. In 2012, the Russian city of Chelyabinsk played host to this tournament.
For the first time in its history, Kazan was granted the right to play host to one of the most prestigious and top-rated continental judo competitions. Individual and team competitions were held on four tatamis of the Tatneft Arena Sports Palace. The tournament’s grand opening ceremony was attended by President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin.
