Competitions in 16 sports will take place within the framework of the First CIS Games to be held on September 4-11, 2021 in Kazan. This was made public at the videoconference meeting of the Working Group for the Games preparation and staging on April 6.

The meeting featured the representatives of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Uzbekistan, and the CIS Executive Committee.

The working group gave a general approval of the revised draft of the Games Regulations having noted that the Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation and Ministry of Sport of the Republic of Tatarstan will carry out the activities in the lead-up to the Games in due time and in full. It has been decided to request the national authorities in the field of physical culture and sport to send the Russian Ministry of Sport nominations to the First CIS Games heads of sports delegations by May 4 and ensure submitting the entries for the participation in the Games.

GIS Games were established by the Decision of the Council of CIS State in October 2019. Their staging will allow increasing cultural and sports potential of the Commonwealth of Independent States, getting an effective platform for the development of the multistakeholder dialogue between the countries.

It is projected that the Games will be held biennially alternating each of the CIS states. What is more, they can be attended both by the teams from the CIS countries and from other states. As per the Games Regulations, the competition programme will be defined by the host country.

Around 3 thousand athletes aged under 23 are expected to participate in the First CIS Games. 12 sports venues will be used for the events. The Firebird has been chosen the Games logo, while Bars – the mascot.

As part of the Games, it is planned to organize the business program connected with the development of physical culture and sport along with the Ordinary meeting of the Council for physical culture and sport among the parties to the Collaboration agreement in the field of physical culture and sport of the participating CIS countries.
