A student, a doter and a future master of sports: introducing the best programmer of Games of the Future
Date of publication:

The tournament in the INTERROS Sports programming discipline ended on February 29 at the IT Park n.a. Bashir Rameev. For two days, 50 participants from 27 countries solved algorithmic tasks in the fight for the Trophy of Games of the Future. The prize fund of the tournament is $ 300 thousand.

The first place was taken by Russian Fedor Romashov. He solved eleven tasks on each of the days. His final score is 22 points. Of the five programming languages available to the participants, Fedor used C/C++ and Python.

After the ceremony of presenting the Trophy of Games of the Future, the winner was congratulated by the Deputy Minister of Sports of Russia, Chairman of the Board of the Russian Sports Programming Federation, Odes Baysultanov. He noted that Romashov is the first candidate to become a master of sports in programming.

“Games of the Future provides the positivity, ideas and innovations that we need today. Programming is developing in Russia, including as a sports discipline. And of course, the title of “master of sports” will be awarded according to it. Fedor will be the first to receive it. Since I am responsible for this area in the Ministry, I can speak with confidence. Naturally, it is impossible to violate the law or regulations, so now the Federation is now finalizing the rules. I think the necessary decisions will be made in the near future,” said Odes Baysultanov. “I think our task is to do everything necessary so that young people have the opportunity to realize their ideas and talents. At the next Games of the Future, the level of training of participants will increase, and we will attract even more participating countries.”

Fedor Romashov is a second-year student at the Higher School of Economics. He started doing sports programming at school, after which he became the winner of many international tournaments and, as part of the Moscow team, the gold medalist of the first Russian championship in the “algorithmic programming” discipline. Romashov will receive a prize of $51 thousand for winning Games of the Future.

–Fedor, how do you feel about the tournament?

– Cool, but difficult. On both days, tasks H and L were very difficult, and I could not solve the last one. I think the second round was even more difficult than the first.

What prevented you from completing the final tasks?
–Yesterday I was close to the answer. But still it didn’t give in to me. And today I realized that there was no chance to deal with L.

Will you try to finish it at home?
– I don’t think I’m going to do this. I understand that a lot of additional theory is required there, which I don’t have time to study. Maybe I’ll come back to this issue in a few months.

What is more important in sport programming: knowledge of mathematics or the ability to write code?
– It depends on the specific task. There was a bit of coding involved, but more mathematical thinking was still required.

How to distribute the strength on the round in order to keep the concentration for all five hours?
–It comes with experience. At first, when you are just starting to participate in competitions, it is difficult to sit for a long time solving tasks. But if you train, and I regularly go through contests at home, it becomes easier. By the end of the round, the strength is running out, but the brain continues to work. The main thing is not to get hung up on one task if it doesn’t work out. It helps to just switch to another one. It seems that there is no difference, but in fact they are all different and stressful in different ways.

Have you been preparing for Games of the Future for a long time?
– About a month, and very diligently. This is a new format for me – 12 tasks per round. I’ve arranged for myself a dozen trainings in this mode. Some tasks worked well, some not so much. Nevertheless, I found time, wrote, looked for mistakes, and trained.

When did you realize that you would not miss out on the leadership? What were you thinking about at that time?
– I realized that I couldn’t solve the last task. I looked at the scoreboard, saw the gap and relaxed. There was still about an hour left. I had a snack and started rooting for my partners in the HSE team and the Moscow team. Alexander Babin took the second place. After the tournament, we will meet and discuss what we could do better. Kirill Kudryashov, who became the third, is also from our team.

How do you like Games of the Future in general? What did you manage to see?
– The atmosphere is amazing. Unfortunately, there was no time to walk around Kazan. As soon as we arrived, I immediately started training. But I watched the Dota 2 tournament. I play it myself and supported Xtreme Gaming.

What language was used and why?
– Mostly C/C++, I solved several tasks in Python. C/C++ is one of the most universal and understandable languages, and it is the easiest to understand.

What can you say about the prize fund of Games of the Future?
– It’s the biggest I’ve seen in the history of sports programming.

What are you planning to spend the prize money on?
– I haven’t thought about it yet. I’ll probably rent an apartment in Moscow. I’m from Barnaul myself, and now I can move out of the hostel.
